Critical thinking in educational contexts: a systematic reviewContenido principal del artículo
Background: Critical thinking has emerged as an essential transversal competency in contemporary education, driven by increasing social complexity, information overload, and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence. These factors demand individuals capable of critically evaluating and engaging with their reality. Objective: To synthesize and examine scientific contributions toward the promotion and strengthening of critical thinking within educational settings through a systematic review of high-impact literature. Methods: Adhering to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic review was conducted using Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO databases for the 2023–2025 period. Rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to identify peer-reviewed studies using specific Boolean descriptors. Results: Twenty-three studies were analyzed, demonstrating a global consensus on the centrality of critical thinking in holistic education. Five thematic clusters emerged: teacher training, instructional strategies, digital technologies and AI, scientific inquiry, and reading comprehension. Findings reveal that problem-based learning (PBL), critical debate, and metacognition are the most effective strategies for transversal development. Conclusion: Strengthening critical thinking requires a systemic approach that integrates teacher professional development, methodological innovation, and authentic assessment, prioritizing its development from early educational stages.
