Authors
Article Submission
Articles must be submitted in Word format (.doc or .docx) through the journal’s web platform. Manuscripts, according to the document type (link to corresponding section), have different word length requirements. A research article should not exceed 8,000 words in total, excluding the bibliography. Longer articles may be accepted on an exceptional basis. Manuscripts must comply with the journal’s editorial guidelines.
Submission Checklist
To facilitate the submission process, authors must verify that their submission meets the following criteria. Submissions that do not meet these guidelines will be returned to the authors. Some of these aspects are outlined in the Article Submission Letter.
Aspects to Verify:
- The manuscript is original, and the authors commit to not submitting it to other journals simultaneously.
- The letter includes the name and surname of each author, identifying the roles they played in the development of the research, according to the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT).
- The manuscript is written in one of the publication languages: Spanish or English.
- The manuscript is submitted in the most recent Word version.
- The manuscript complies with the publication requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
- The manuscript complies with the journal’s ethical policies.
- Authors have ensured that their manuscripts adhere to the research integrity principles outlined in the Singapore Declaration on Research Integrity.
- The article includes a title, abstract, and keywords in both English and Spanish.
- If the article is derived from a research project, the title, project identifier, funding source, and year are indicated.
- The DOI (Digital Object Identifier) should be included in each reference whenever possible. If the DOI is not provided, the respective URLs of the references must be included.
- Whenever possible, the article should be linked to the DMP, protocols, software, or dataset, with full citation and DOI.
Journal Scope
Horizontes Revista de Investigación en Ciencias de la Educación is a scientific publication that communicates advances in the field of education. It welcomes writings resulting from high-quality scientific research, with an international scope, and open to all educators and researchers.
The journal accepts work developed using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methodological approaches in the following areas:
- Educational Sciences: pedagogy, didactics, curriculum, educational evaluation, early, basic, and higher education.
- Educational Psychology and Human Development.
- Educational Innovation, technologies applied to education, and virtual education.
- Educational Management and Public Policies in Education.
- Teacher Training and Pedagogical Practices.
- Inclusive and Intercultural Education.
- Educational Research and Applied Methodologies.
- Measurement and Assurance of Educational Quality.
The journal is open access, with no charges for publishing or accessing its content. It is continuously published in PDF format. The editorial team defines the order, volume, and issue of the accepted manuscripts.
Types of Texts
Manuscripts submitted must adopt one of these types. A template is available at: https://revistahorizontes.org/index.php/revistahorizontes/information/authors
- Original Research Articles: Based on case studies or comparative analyses that promote the debate on relevant topics in educational sciences from theoretical and methodological perspectives. Empirical data presentations and discussions will also be accepted if they deepen themes on methodologies and techniques or regional topics based on case studies. The article must not exceed 7,000 words (including all sections of the manuscript except for the References)
Original Research Article
The article must include, at a minimum, the following elements:
- Title: in Spanish and English (maximum 15 words).
- Abstract: in Spanish and English (maximum 250 words).
- Keywords: in Spanish and English.
- Introduction: presents the objectives, scope, and originality of the text, and may include a broader theoretical development if the topic justifies it.
- Methodology: presents the methodological aspects of the research.
- Results: provides a descriptive presentation of the findings.
- Discussion: interpretation of the findings, linking them with the findings of other authors, comparing the results with the current theoretical discussion, considering the main similarities and differences.
- Conclusions: summarizes the results and contributions, and the achievement of the objectives.
- References: at least 30 bibliographic sources, 70% of which should be indexed in Scopus or WoS.
- It will be positively evaluated if the work has: a published DMP and a published dataset.
Review Article. A review article presents the results of research that provides an updated overview of a particular area of knowledge. Narrative, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses are especially welcome. These critical and exhaustive literature syntheses on a specific topic must have a research question, and where possible, follow the PRISMA protocol or other recognized standards and have the protocol published on OSF. Manuscripts should range from 6,000 to 8,000 words.
The review article should include the following elements:
- Title: in Spanish and English (maximum 15 words).
- Abstract: in Spanish and English (maximum 250 words).
- Keywords: in Spanish and English.
- Introduction: presents the research question, scope, and originality of the text, and should define the scope and type of review being conducted.
- Methodology: presents the epistemological, methodological, and ethical aspects of the research.
- Presentation of results: reports the main findings of the review.
- Discussion: interpretation of the findings, linking them with the findings of other authors, comparing the results with the current theoretical discussion, considering the main similarities and differences.
- Conclusions: summarizes the results and contributions, and the achievement of the objectives.
- References: due to the characteristics of this type of article, a minimum of 50 bibliographic sources is required.
- Only systematic review works whose protocol is registered on OSF will be evaluated. The respective link and DOI must be provided.
Theoretical Essays: Theoretical essays are critical and well-founded reflections on relevant topics in education. They should have a theoretical-methodological foundation aimed at showing educational innovations (length: 4,000 to 6,000 words).
Theoretical essays should include the following elements:
- Title: in Spanish and English (maximum 15 words).
- Abstract: in Spanish and English (maximum 250 words).
- Keywords: in Spanish and English.
- Introduction: presents the research question, scope, and originality of the text, and should define the scope and type of review being conducted.
- Development: reports the main findings of the review.
- Conclusions: summarizes the results and contributions, and the achievement of the objectives.
- References: due to the characteristics of this type of article, a maximum of 20 bibliographic sources is required.
Editorial Guidelines
Language: Articles must be submitted in Spanish or English. All articles must have a title, keywords, and abstract in both languages. Any original work in Spanish must have the title, keywords, and abstract translated into English. If the original is in English, these elements must also be provided in Spanish.
Article Information
This information is included in the Article Submission Letter (https://revistahorizontes.org/index.php/revistahorizontes/information/authors).
Funding: Authors must specify the sources of funding for the research from which the article derives, including the project title, funding entity or person, and project code or identifier. Format: name of the granting agency, project code, and year.
Conflict of Interest Declaration: Authors must declare any conflicts of interest related to the article, between the authors, the journal, the editorial entity, and the funding entities. If there are no conflicts, this must also be explicitly stated: "The author declares no conflict of interest." Each author must make this declaration.
Ethical Approval: Authors must indicate the name of the approving ethics committee, the approval code, and the date of approval. If the nature of the research does not require ethical approval, this must be explicitly stated.
Acknowledgements: Authors may acknowledge individuals (provided they have consented to the use of their names) or entities that helped make the article possible by providing technical, operational, or financial resources.

Reference System and Citation Guidelines
APA Citation Style: Articles must strictly follow the citation standards for texts and references according to the current international standards, as suggested by the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition.
Authors are solely responsible for the list of references provided. Once the article is accepted or published, no additions to the list will be accepted. Authors are responsible for the existence of each cited reference.

Publication Frequency
Published scientific articles are available in electronic format under an open-access model with continuous publication. The journal accepts submissions throughout the year and does not charge any fees at any stage of the editorial process.
Article Processing Charges
There are no charges for submitting or processing articles. All editorial processes in Horizontes Revista de Investigación en Ciencias de la Educación are completely free.
