Background: Training future teachers with scientific inquiry skills is one of the most pressing challenges in higher education, as the quality of pedagogical decisions depends on it. In this context, formative assessment, understood as a continuous process of information gathering and feedback, is a strategy for strengthening students' research skills. Objective: To determine the relationship between formative assessment and research skills in students in their final year of a professional education program at a Peruvian public university. Methodology: The study employed a quantitative, basic, non-experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 101 students who completed two questionnaires. Results: 67.33% of participants perceived formative assessment as adequate, while 55.45% achieved a high level of research skills. The overall correlation was positive, weak, and statistically significant (rho = 0.289; p = 0.002). The cooperative domain-maintained significance (rho = 0.180; p = 0.036), unlike the analytical and interpretive domains (rho = 0.082; p = 0.207) and the oral communicative domain (rho = 0.157; p = 0.058). Conclusion: Formative assessment has a differential impact on the research profile, as it fosters collaboration, but it is insufficient to enhance analytical skills and oral communication.
